First the bin width is usually used for a histogram. A scatter plot does not have bin width, as there are no bins involved.

Usually we are talking about a histgoram.

The bin width itself really depends on your problem. 

I am usually aiming for number of bins (and not a specific bin width). 5 to 10 bins are optimal for most problems.
